White fillings, which are also known as composite fillings, are performed to repair a tooth. Either the tooth has been affected by decay, chipped, cracked, broken or simply worn. The affected area (if decayed) is removed and then filled with a composite filling.

There are various types of filling materials, however white fillings are commonly used because they provide a more natural looking restoration and are quite easily moulded. Old silver amalgam fillings have been used often in the past however many are looking to replace these with the newer white fillings. This is primarily due to the fact that silver amalgam fillings tend to expand and contract with change in temperature which can cause cracks over time, and can create a liability to your long-term dental health. In addition silver amalgam fillings have mercury which can also be damaging to your health.

If you would like more information on white fillings, please contact our team at Family Dental Care.
