Grinding and clenching teeth during stress

Management of Excessive Teeth Grinding and Clenching

Most of us grind or clench occasionally. This is normal. What is not part of the normal chewing action is excessive clenching or grinding, a term we collectively call bruxism. The consequence of this can cause permanent damage to teeth and the jaw joint. It can happen in both adults and children and should be addressed as soon as possible before severe damage is done.

Causes of Bruxism

  • physical stress
  • psychologial stress
  • sleep disorder related
  • improper occlusion

Signs and symptoms of bruxism

Can be a combination of:

  • pain in teeth and sensitivity
  • chronic facial pain
  • flattened and worn teeth
  • stiffness and pain in jaw joint
  • earache

Treatment of bruxism

treatment modalities include:

  • remove causes of bruxism
  • change behaviour
  • occlusal splint (night guard)
  • painkillers, muscle relaxants
  • repair to the damage done to the teeth

A detailed diagnosis of the problem is crucial in the management of this condition and here at Geelong Family Dental Care, our dentists are well trained to manage and discuss treatment options for your condition. It is a condition if left untreated, can lead to permanent long term damage to your teeth and also your long term well being.
